IYONG

IYONG was started by Matai Society to rebuild the livelihood of people affected by conflict.
What is IYONG?
IYONG is a resilient economic response to the Manipur Conflict undertaken by Matai Society, starting in August 2023.
IYONG basically is a locally woven fabric that has been a livelihood to thousands of rural weavers for decades. Despite being known for its durability, authenticity and intricate designs, the fabric is slowly disappearing from the market as powerlooms continue to replace handlooms and traditional markets shrink at the face of economic recessions. The current Manipur Conflict has worsened the situation by displacing hundreds of weavers as well as destroying market flow.
In May, 2023, thousands were displaced overnight losing homes, lives and livelihoods. IYONG was started through a collaborative efforts of Manipuri Weddings, Urep, Mahei Centre and Matai Society to rebuild the livelihood of those affected by conflict. The first of its training for "The School Bag Project" was led by Ojha Tomba from Churachandpur who was displaced on May 3rd, 2023. IYONG evolved as it is in the hands of weavers, IDP and collaborators.
